How far back a mailbox is read
A mailbox is read as far back as you choose, newest first, while new mail keeps arriving.
When you add a mailbox, the studio asks how much of its past to read: two weeks, a month, three months, six months, a year or everything. Older emails then come in a few at a time while new mail keeps arriving. Before the build of 30 October 2026 a mailbox was read only 14 days and 300 emails back, so replies to older conversations could miss the column.
Choose the history of a new mailbox
- In the project's settings, under Mailboxes of this project, click Add a mailbox.
- Fill in the address and the connection as usual.
- Under How far back to read, choose 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months, 1 year or Everything.
- Click Try and add.
There is no default, and the mailbox is not added until you choose. Beside the choice the form says what it costs: every email brought in is read and sorted by this project's own AI subscription, so a longer history uses more of it. See Mailboxes for each project for the rest of the form.
Mailboxes added before
A mailbox added before this build keeps reading as it did until you answer. The mail column asks once, saying that only the last 14 days were read when the mailbox was added and how far back its emails should be read. Pick a time and click Read this far. The column shows how many emails the inbox holds for each choice, counted every six hours.
How the older emails come in
The studio reads the history on the mailbox's one open line, in the inbox and every junk folder it reads, newest first, 25 emails at a time and at most 100 in one look. New mail is read first each time, so it still arrives as before. The column shows the older emails coming in with the count so far, then how many came, until you press OK.
An email from the past is no news. It rings nothing, sends no notice to the phone and never counts as the answer to a conversation you marked. It keeps the read or unread state it has on the server. An older email that answers one the studio already held joins that conversation, and an email the studio holds already is never brought in twice.
Change it later
The mailbox's settings show Read back with the depth in force. A longer time brings in the older emails; a shorter one removes nothing. Every email brought in can be found with Search your email. The iPhone app adds no mailbox, so it shows none of this.
Questions
Does reading a long history cost anything?
Every email brought in is read by the project's own AI subscription, so a longer history uses more of it.
Will old emails ring or notify me?
No. An email from the past rings nothing and sends no notice to the phone.
